Storm/Emergency Preparedness Guide

We know that your family's safety and well-being is of the utmost importance. So when severe weather threatens, keep your family prepared with Rayovac® batteries and flashlights and this Storm Preparedness Guide.

This Storm Preparedness Guide has been designed to insure that you and your family are as prepared as possible for when Mother Nature comes at you with her worst. Included in this guide is a Family Plan to discuss and prepare what needs to happen in case a storm threatens, a Supply Kit should a severe situation occur, a list of necessary contact information, and some fun activities to help pass the time.

You and your family should create a plan in case there is an emergency situation. When creating your Family Plan, the following topics should be addressed:

  1. Know what your family should do if there is a need to evacuate your house:
    1. Identify all possible exits.
      1. Designate at least two meeting spots outside your home, such as right outside your home, a municipal building, or a friend's or neighbor's house.
*Everyone must know these addresses and phone numbers
    2. Have a plan for your pets.
      1. If possible keep your pets with you at all times.
      2. Keep in mind, Red Cross Emergency Shelters generally do not accept pets due to health regulations. Knowing where boarding facilities, veterinarians with boarding capabilities, hotels that accept pets, and animal shelters are can help you ensure that your pets remain safe during a storm.
  2. Designate a family contact person.
    1. Everyone in your family should be familiar and comfortable with this individual.
    2. Everyone should know this individual's phone number and, when safe, call to give their location
  3. Assemble a Storm Supply Kit

Pointers for Parents

You may have to leave your house during a disaster and sleep somewhere else for a while. It’s smart to put together your Kid’s Activity Kit so you will have things to do and share with your own children and others. Store these items in a backpack or duffle bag, and make sure you can carry it easily.

Some suggestions for your Activity Kit:

  • A few of your favorite books
  • Crayons, pencils or marking pens and plenty of paper
  • Scissors and glue
  • Two favorite toys such as a doll or action figure
  • One or two board games
  • A deck of cards
  • A puzzle (one with many pieces is good – it takes a long time to do!)
  • Favorite stuffed animal or puppet
  • Favorite blanket or pillow
